Description

Ventrain is a single-use ventilation device specifically designed for difficult or obstructed airway situations. Ventrain is based on a fundamentally new ventilation principle: Expiratory Ventilation Assistance (EVA); and, therefore, offers important new features:

    Effective, full ventilation of a patient with an obstructed upper airway;
    More therapeutic options in cases involving difficult airways;
    connection for side-stream capnometry (this functionality is not available in the USA).

Effective, full ventilation in a patient with an obstructed airway

Ventrain is the only ventilation device that provides full ventilation in "Cannot Intubate, Cannot Ventilate" situations. Ventrain not only supplies oxygen during the inspiration phase, but also uses suction to actively remove gas from the lungs during the expiration phase. This active expiration has been named Expiratory Ventilation Assistance (EVA).

Compared to jet ventilation, EVA considerably reduces the risk of intrapulmonary pressure build-up / air trapping, which may result in barotrauma and circulatory collapse. Additionally, using Ventrain in combination with the cricothyrotomy catheter Cricath enables an I:E of 1:1, while alternative methods can only obtain an I:E of 1:4 or 1:3. At a flow rate of 15 L/Min, the result is a Minute Volume of over 6 L/Min for the combination of Ventrain with Cricath compared to a Minute Volume of only about 3 L/Min for the alternatives. A high Minute Volume is necessary to re-establish adequate oxygenation levels as quick as possible in cases involving life threatening desaturation.

NOTE: In the event of an airway emergency in a paediatric patient (< ~5 years old), a narrow bore endotracheal tube should be used as an alternative to a transtracheal needle catheter like Cricath. For example, a neonatal airway exchange or intubating catheter may be applied in such cases. Make sure to set the flow rate at a much lower level and adjust the I:E by carefully observing the patient’s chest, as the expiration phase will be longer with such catheters. Cricath

Ventinova Cricath

Description

Cricath is an innovative, flexible 2mm needle cricothyrotomy catheter that enables quick access to the trachea by insertion through the cricoid membrane with the standard catheter over needle procedure. Cricath is designed in close collaboration with clinicians and has advantageous characteristics:

    Easy inserted into the trachea;
    Low risk of kinking due a number of smart features.

Easy access to trachea and reduced risk of kinking

Cricath has a number of unique and smart features to enhance proper insertion and to reduce kinking. Kinking of the lumen is a well-known problem in cricothyrotomy catheters and often occurs at that area just under the point where the lumen is fixed to the flange. Therefore Cricath is designed differently:

1. Elevated fixation point and smoothly curved opening
The fixation point of the Cricath lumen is located a few millimeters below the surface of the flange. The opening around the lumen is enlarged and smoothly curved allowing the lumen to move and reducing the risk of kinking.
2. Tilting mechanism
Due to the tilting mechanism in Cricath, which consists of a hinge between the lumen and flange, the lumen can tilt relative to the flange, enabling it to be properly positioned in the trachea, even in a patient with abnormal neck anatomy requiring an unusual lumen angle.
3. Material of the lumen
Cricath is made of a special, high-grade Teflon (PFA), material that is very strong while retaining flexibility. Used in combination with the carefully chosen dimensions of the lumen, the material further reduces the risk of kinking.
4. Quick and safe access to the trachea
In “Cannot Intubate Cannot Ventilate” situations, every second counts. Cricath allows safe and quick access to the trachea in order to prevent desaturation of the patient.

5. Catheter over needle procedure
Cricath allows a safe and quick insertion of the catheter by following the standard catheter over needle procedure through the cricoid membrane, without having to make an incision first.
6. Anatomically curved
The needle of Cricath is anatomically curved to prevent posterior tracheal wall injury during insertion. The catheter will retain its curved shape after removal of the needle.
7. Flexible, ergonomic flange
The ergonomically, flexible flange used in Cricath easily adapts to the patient’s neck and enables quick fixation by means of the enclosed neck strap or surgical sutures.
8. Female Luer Connector
Cricath is equipped with a standard female luer to connect Cricath to Ventrain or to another respiratory device, for example an automated jet ventilator.
